Eye Candy...

Yesterday I was driving home from work into my neighborhood, when I passed the same set of red trees I've been eyeing for the past month.  Every time I say "those trees are SO pretty!" and then continue on my merry way.  Well yesterday I decided I was finally going to take a picture of them.  I walked in and grabbed my camera, waved at my neighbors (what is that crazy Kristina up to now?) and walked 3 houses down from mine to this gorgeous set of trees.  I love them....  I want 50 of them in my backyard...along with my imaginary Weeping Willows, Cherry Blossoms, and Southern Live Oaks covered in Spanish moss.  What can I say, I like trees. :)

Today, take a moment to stop and look at the trees. :)

Have a fabulous day!

Holiday Recipes- Breakfast

So with the holidays coming up, I thought I would share with you all some of my favorite recipes.  I like to cook and am always on the hunt for new recipes, but I wanted to share a few of my "staple" recipes.  These are the REALLY good ones and I have been making them for years. :)  I am a huge breakfast person to the point where I even like breakfast food for dinner.  Call me crazy, but it's good.  But here are a few of my favorite breakfast recipes.  I hope you and your family enjoy them as much as I do. :)

My first favorite breakfast recipe is from The American Country Inn and Bed And Breakfast Cookbook.  This cookbook belongs to my mother, but I tend to borrow (steal) it whenever I can.  Maybe I'll get my own copy one day?  :)  It's my FAVORITE cookbook!  It's up there with Martha Stewart, Barefoot Contessa, and Paula Deen, yes the recipes are that good.  It's a collection of recipes from tons of top Bed and Breakfasts around the Unites States.  It's the bomb diggity.  Okay, so here is a great breakfast recipe for Strata.  You can make it the night before and then just bake it in the morning, Easy peasy!  And it's delish!

Strata
The American Country Inn and Bed and Breakfast Cookbook

(Submitted by The Pine Tree Inn-Wallace Idaho)

Ingredients
12 slices of bread, remove crust and cut into cubes. (I use a fresh baked loaf of white bread from our local bakery...it's my way of being fancy)
1 1/2 cups diced ham (You can buy diced ham at the grocery store)
1 cup diced green pepper
1/2 cup finely minced onion
3/4 cup grated Cheddar cheese (I use shredded cheese from the grocery store)
3/4 cup grated Jack cheese (shredded store kind)
7 eggs
1 teaspoon salt
3 teaspoons dry mustard
3 cups milk

Grease a 9x13-inch pan and place bread on the bottom. Combine ham, green pepper, onion, and cheese, pour over the bread. Mix together remaining ingredients and poor over strata. Let sit overnight in the refridgerator (this is key). In the morning, bake in a 325 degree oven for 1 hour. Serves 6-8.

Let cool before serving, strata will be more "firm".  Just sayin... :)

And my second favorite breakfast recipe takes a little bit longer to make, but it is SO worth it.  I made this recipe for my in laws last year and they were IMPRESSED.  Gold star for me.... :)  It's also a Barefoot Contessa recipe.  Ina Garten is a genius!  Love her...

Banana Sour Cream Pancakes
(Barefoot Contessa Recipe)

Ingredients
1 1/2 cups of all purpose flour
3 tablespoons sugar
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt (I don't use kosher salt...whoops)
1/2 cup sour cream
3/4 cups plus 1 tablespoon milk
2 extra-large eggs
1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (I add more...because I love it)
1 teaspoon grated lemon zest (this is optional...my husband does not like lemon anything, but I do..he's a weirdo)
Unsalted butter
2 ripe bananas, diced, plus extra for serving
Pure maple syrup (pure maple syrup is hella expensive...Mrs. Butterworth works just fine)

In a medium bowl, sift together flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whick together sour cream, milk, eggs, vanilla, and lemon zest. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones, mixing only until combined.
Melt 1 tablespoon of butter in large skillet over medium-low heat until it bubbles. Ladle the pancake batter into the pan. Add (sprinkle) tablespoon of bananas on each pancake. Cook for 2-3 minutes, until bubbles appear on top and the underside is nicely brown. Flip the pancakes and cook for another minute, until browned. Wipe out the pan with a paper towel, add more butter to pan. Continue cooking pancakes until all batter is used. Serve with sliced bananas, butter, and maple syrup.
*I make these on our griddle, huge time saver and easy clean up.
*And they don't taste like sour cream...they are good I promise. :)

Okay, so there are my favorite holiday breakfast recipes.
Stay tuned for appetizers, side dishes, and desserts.  Oh my... :)

Have a fabulous day! :)

Feel Good Friday- One Year

A year ago this week I started my photography business.  I was terrified, overwhelmed, full of self doubt....oh and I was terrified.  I bought my camera (Canon- T1i) and sat on the floor for hours trying to figure out all of the little buttons and settings, used my dog as a guinea pig, and kept telling myself over and over that I could do this.  I started a blog, took pictures of anything and everything (dishes, pizza, my dog) and posted whatever I could.  I now cringe at some of those early blog posts and pictures, but I just wanted to get as much experience as I could.  Oh and the whole blog thing, SO terrifying.  Putting yourself out there...terrifying.  I'm not the best "writer" and I use words like awesome, AH-mazing, fabulous, cool, toolbag....ya I won't be publishing a book anytime soon.  I swear I have an extensive vocabulary... at times...  :)  So the whole blog thing and putting myself on the internet and allowing people to "judge" me and "judge" my work (pictures of pizza and my dog) was terrifying.  Still is.

Some of you know, I studied photography in college.  I took my first photography class my senior year of high school (Go Mrs. Santos!) and was hooked.  I loved it...LOVED it!  That was it, that's what I wanted to do with my life.  I went off to college wanting to be the next Annie Leibovitz and dreamed about being a photographer for Rolling Stone Magazine AND Vogue.  Oh yes, I was going to do both. :)  But after 2 years of studying photography, I got burnt out.  It wasn't fun anymore...  I felt like I had no control over my work, the professors did.  They chose what I printed, they chose our subject matter, it just felt like a chore...I felt like a robot.  My creative spirit went out the window and I switched my major to Psychology and finished school.

Well fast forward to 2009, the year I got married.  While Tim and I were on our honeymoon I chatted how I REALLY wanted to get back into photography, not as a hobby....as a serious photographer.  But of course there was that one thing that was holding me back...self doubt.  After a good pep talk from my husband, I said what the hell and just went for it.  I decided that I would take a year off from Grad School (which was a big deal) and pursue this crazy dream of mine.  If I was going to try, I was going to do it 100%.  I told myself I was only going to do it for a year and see where it went.  If I sucked, if I failed, at least I tried and that was all I could do.  I sent a handful of friends a message on Facebook explaining my crazy dream and that I needed to build up my portfolio and offered free sessions to everyone.  Some people probably thought I was crazy, but some people actually took me up on my offer and for that I will be FOREVER grateful!  My first shoot was with Erin and Aaron and I shot their engagement session.  I was SOOOO nervous.  Erin and Aaron actually drove from Lexington, KY for their session and I did not want to disappoint them.  Well they loved their pictures and 2 months later they asked me to shoot their wedding.  I did a happy dance and wanted to puke at the same time.  Again, that terrifying feeling in my stomach set in and I began to doubt myself, but this is what I wanted to do.  And from there things just took off.  In the last year I have learned so much about photography, my camera, my business, and myself.

- Stop doubting yourself and stop whining...it's annoying.
- Practice, practice, and practice....you will get better.
- Stay true to yourself
- Photoshop is your friend, not your enemy
- Throwing things does not solve anything
- Comparing yourself to other photographers is pointless and will only make you feel like crap, and who
   needs that.
- Keep it real
- A good lense can change everything
- Crying only prolongs the editing process and leads to a headache
- Cursing at the computer is pointless, and scares the dog.
- People are AH-mazing, especially photographers who know exactly how you feel and are willing to share
   and help you learn.
- You are going to make a mistake, lots of them...all you can do is learn from them and move on.
- I have an AH-mazing set of family and friends who are so supportive.
- This makes me happy

And I could go on and on.... :)

I just want to say THANK YOU to my amazing husband, family, and friends for supporting me.  THANK YOU to all of my WONDERFUL and FABULOUS (there I go again) clients who have welcomed me into their homes and into their lives.  And THANK YOU to all of my KICK ASS supporters, I REALLY appreciate everything!  Without all of you, my business would be nothing.  So thank you. :)

Believe in yourself.

Have a fabulous day! :)

Edwardsville Family/Children's Photographer - Andre Family

I recently met with the Andre family for a family session.  Jen is my best friend's sister and I have known her for a long long time.  Jen used to drive us around in her green neon, do our hair for dances, and Katie and I used to hang out in her room (when Jen was away at college) and watch tv and call boys. :)  Being asked to photograph Jen with her husband Chris and her son Jackson was definitely a treat for me.  Here are a few from their family session. Enjoy!

Hey Jackson where's Elmo??? :)

Jackson is such a handsome little guy...

And makes THE cutest faces...this is one of many...

Then we moved over to the swings...Oh how I miss swinging....now I just get motion sickness.
But Jackson sure loved it. :)

Hehe...this is one of my favorite faces...the "I don't want to get out of the swing" face...

Now how cute is that hair? Hehe.... :)

Jackson has some mad skills which include climbing...

When I saw that they had a Weeping Willow tree in their backyard I got REALLY excited...love them...
And I heart this one...precious... :)

Jackson's mad skills also include swinging a bat like a pro and sending a ball flying across the backyard....
My jaw dropped...serious mad skills....

Thanks again Andre Family for one awesome family session! :)

Have a fabulous day!
